Newcastle Jets' Ronald Vargas ready to build on positive debut

Newcastle Jets' Ronald Vargas ready to build on positive debut
From ESPN - October 11, 2017

Newcastle marquee star Ronald Vargas is flattered at being described as a "Rolls Royce" recruit after a dream A-League debut.

But the Venezuelan international insists the team still have plenty more under the bonnet after a thumping 5-1 derby victory away to Central Coast.

It is the most goals the Jets have scored in a match for three-and-a-half years. After finishing last season as the A-League's worst-attacking side, long-suffering supporters are daring to dream of ending their seven-year finals drought.

Vargas, 30, did not get on the scoresheet but did enough for Fox Sports pundit Mark Bosnich to liken him to a Rolls Royce for his seemingly effortless runs through midfield.

"It's a good impression that they are comparing me like this. I just can say thanks about this comment -- it's very positive," a giggling Vargas told reporters on Thursday.

"It's a very good [car]."

But the former AEK Athens, Anderlecht and Club Brugge playmaker is convinced their five-goal haul against the Mariners is just the beginning.

"We did not play the way we want to play," Vargas said.
