Christian McCaffrey, James Bradberry get nod for training camp MVPs

SPARTANBURG, S.C. -- Believe it or not, the Carolina Panthers' training camp buzz was about more than just Cam Newton's surgically-repaired shoulder.

True, the Wofford College portion of camp began on July 26 and ended on Sunday with questions lingering on whether the 2015 NFL MVP would be ready for the Sept. 10 opener.

That Newton didnt throw in team drills for 14 days before participating in red-zone drills on Sunday fueled that.

But in between waiting for Newton to throw, a lot of players had big moments. With that, here are my offensive and defensive MVPs of the 2017 camp:

Offensive MVP: If you didnt notice, first-round draft pick Christian McCaffrey received a lot of hype and headlines during camp -- and justifiably so. The former Stanford running back/receiver was just as dynamic as he was billed. And from Day 1 he was a crowd favorite, getting cheers for things he would tell you are routine. But watching McCaffrey juke out Pro Bowl linebackers Luke Kuechly and Thomas Davis left most going, Wow!" -- including Kuechly and Davis. Wide receivers coach Lance Taylor, who coached McCaffrey at Stanford the past three years, had players and coaches come up to him almost every day acknowledging McCaffrey was everything he told them he would be before the Panthers selected him with the eighth overall pick.
