Chiefs let Patrick Mahomes II show off his arm on his first NFL throw

KANSAS CITY, Mo. -- Having called deep throws on the opening plays for each of the Kansas City Chiefs first two quarterbacks, coach Andy Reid didnt want to leave rookie Patrick Mahomes II out of the party.

So Reid asked Mahomes whether he too wanted to chuck the ball deep, on his initial NFL play, in Friday nights preseason opener against the San Francisco 49ers. Mahomes didnt hesitate before telling Reid that he did.

Coach Reid asked me if I liked it from what I had seen from the other quarterbacks, Mahomes said after the Chiefs 27-17 loss to the 49ers. They both completed theirs and I thought it was a good idea. We went out there and completed it and then tried to build upon that every time.

Mahomes lost the 41-yard pass to Demarcus Robinson because of a holding penalty to a teammate, tackle Isaiah Battle. But all in all, Mahomes won the night. The Chiefs first-round draft pick completed 7 of 9 passes for 49 yards and a touchdown.

I wish we would have won the game, Mahomes said. That would have been the biggest thing. But I wanted to try to just move the chains. It could have been a little bit better. But we had one touchdown and hopefully we can build upon that next week.
